It’s Hot!

​Before we set off for Paris, people either warned us of fires or heat. We were well aware of both. We knew we’d be well away from fires - for now. But it’s been in the 90s for the past three days and today the high is expected to be 101. The highs occur in the early evening, so we’ve been able to be out and about before the high. But it’s still been plenty hot. 

Today I need a rest. Just as well to do it on a super hot day. I’ve walked an average of 3 1/2 miles a day and climbed an average of 13 flights of steps a day. 

Monday we went to see Notre Dane Cathedral. It was still closed in 2024, so it was in our list of things to see that we missed then. The reconstruction is beautiful, with vibrant colors. As we were waiting to get in, I thought about how grieved people were at the destruction of the cathedral and how people are flocking to see the renovations. As Chris said, there is a deep yearning for God in the human soul, whether we recognize it or not. 

We were thinking of going to a movie Wednesday, as a good way to beat the heat. I did some research and learned that A/C was spotty in the theaters and bedbugs abounded. So we scratched that off our list. We decided the best bet would be a place where tourists were, so we went to the Petit Palais. Much better than the Grand Palais! It has a huge permanent collection of interesting art. We came to the Petit Palais when we were here in 2024, but didn’t see everything in the collection. This time we returned to some old favorites and also saw some pieces of a new exhibit of contemporary artists called WE’RE (still) HERE. Pictures are tagged to you in Facebook.

This past week I’ve had the chance to get to a gluten-free bakery and I had a delicious eclair. What a treat!

Today we are doing laundry in anticipation of our weekend trip to London tomorrow. Also played some Yahtzee. Not sure what we’ll do for dinner, as it will be blazing hot from 5:00-8:00 pm.

 We're here. We're in Madrid. What a crazy day Monday, April 15 was. We met in the morning with our architect and contractor for the renovation of our apartment in Chicago. While we were talking, my phone buzzed with a notification that our flight from Chicago to Toronto was delayed. I tried to get an earlier flight over the phone, but we needed to get to the airport and make the change there. Shout out to Nancy Atsumi for her excellent driving that got us to O'Hare. As it was, it was too late to get onto the earlier flight. The agent assured us we would have enough time for our connection to Madrid and we went to the gate. There, I learned that the flight was delayed even longer. Chris went to the airline desk and started investigating alternatives. J'ai Attrapé Un Rhum!

 Translation: I caught a cold! Isn't that great? Sounds like I trapped it somehow. So much more empowering than falling victim, as I usually feel. Rather, it's an accomplishment. It hasn't stopped me entirely, though. More on that below. First, we've been settling in to Paris and our apartment. We still really like it, but the kitchen really shows its age. The condition of the kitchenware is pretty bad: dull knives; dirty pots and pans (someone didn't clean properly before they left); glassware made for children rather than adults. But we're making do. Given that we're staying for a month, we decided it was worth buying adult glassware.  We're gradually finding grocery stores where we can find some more familiar items and food is actually reasonably fresh. Our first adventure in food shopping yielded shriveled green beans. I'm still yearning for unsweetened coconut milk. Chris says "lots of luck." But I'm not finished looking. On Thursd...

Traffic, Cats, Restaurant Music

 I know this is a barrage of posts, but we leave for Barcelona tomorrow and I want to get our experiences in Tangiers written up before then. I've lived in countries where traffic is chaotic. It's nothing new to me. I flirted with a driver in Mexico City while our cab driver was trying to cut him off. I panicked when my mother was stuck in the middle of a railroad crossing with the arms coming down in Bangkok.  Traffic in Tangiers is actually reasonable orderly. But there is a certain amount of jockeying for position, especially in the small traffic circles. I saw cars using other cars as shields as they made their way into the circle. There are also a ton of pedestrians, who are generally given the right of way. But there is a certain amount of playing chicken. Pedestrians tentatively step out into the street or they step out brazenly and put their hand out to halt the car coming toward them.
