The Final Stretch

​We’re starting our last weekend in Paris. I’m exhausted. But we still have things we want to do. Here’s what we’ve been doing during the past week. 

Last weekend we went to London via the Channel Train (Chunnel). Our niece Shayla lives and works in London. We met her and her boyfriend for a meal Friday night. Saturday Shayla showed us around the city. We took a Harry Potter tour, which also showed us a good deal of the city and the various buildings and passageways that inspired scenes in the movies. Saturday evening we went to the Eucharist for the Blessed Virgin Mary at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Sunday we went to Guildhall Gallery. While the gallery was being built, excavators discovered a Roman amphitheater, which they’ve incorporated into their exhibits. 

On Monday, back in Paris, we went to the Pere Lachaise cemetery, where a number of famous people are buried, including Jim Morrison. His grave was by far the most decorated. 

The past few days we went to religious sites: First, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. A woman from the church we go to here told me about the Miraculous Medal and told me to visit the chapel. Yesterday we went to the Grand Mosque, which is observing its 100th year in Paris. We had dinner at a lovely restaurant near us called Le Splendide. See pix on FB of the ceiling. 

I know this post is mostly just a laundry list of where we’ve been. I’m just really tired and don’t have the energy to be more creative. 

 We have a few more days left. I’ll be back with another post before we leave.

 We're here. We're in Madrid. What a crazy day Monday, April 15 was. We met in the morning with our architect and contractor for the renovation of our apartment in Chicago. While we were talking, my phone buzzed with a notification that our flight from Chicago to Toronto was delayed. I tried to get an earlier flight over the phone, but we needed to get to the airport and make the change there. Shout out to Nancy Atsumi for her excellent driving that got us to O'Hare. As it was, it was too late to get onto the earlier flight. The agent assured us we would have enough time for our connection to Madrid and we went to the gate. There, I learned that the flight was delayed even longer. Chris went to the airline desk and started investigating alternatives. After a lot of work and frustration, we ended up flying from O'Hare to Munich, Germany - my birthplace. So I've seen the inside of the airport in Munich! J'ai Attrapé Un Rhum!

 Translation: I caught a cold! Isn't that great? Sounds like I trapped it somehow. So much more empowering than falling victim, as I usually feel. Rather, it's an accomplishment. It hasn't stopped me entirely, though. More on that below. First, we've been settling in to Paris and our apartment. We still really like it, but the kitchen really shows its age. The condition of the kitchenware is pretty bad: dull knives; dirty pots and pans (someone didn't clean properly before they left); glassware made for children rather than adults. But we're making do. Given that we're staying for a month, we decided it was worth buying adult glassware.  We're gradually finding grocery stores where we can find some more familiar items and food is actually reasonably fresh. Our first adventure in food shopping yielded shriveled green beans. I'm still yearning for unsweetened coconut milk. Chris says "lots of luck." But I'm not finished looking. On Thursd...

"We'll Always Have Paris"

This afternoon Chris and I were out and about and he showed me something on his phone about the phrase "We'll always have Paris," from the classic movie "Casablanca." His comment: I promise I'll never say this to you. I said to him, "Well, I actually used this phrase as the title of my blog."   That being said, Chris said to me yesterday morning that this 5 month trip has been like a second honeymoon. We have always been pretty independent - together in the morning, but then going our separate ways and coming back together in the evening. Here we have pretty much been joined at the hip, discovering and sharing a place we love. And we are going home to people we love and a city we expect to learn to love - and already really like it a lot! So we are saying good-bye to Paris. I'm sure we will return.
